Designing your backyard
More than a beautiful pool shape.
Plan the experience first, then choose the details. These four conversations help turn inspiration into a design you can use every day.
01 / Design considerations
Start with the way you will use the water.
A social backyard needs room to gather as well as swim. Think about shallow lounging, an unobstructed swimming area and where guests will sit. A fitness-focused design may prioritize a longer clear lane; a compact courtyard may benefit from a simpler footprint.
Bring a wish list: swimming, entertaining, exercise or relaxation.
Look beyond the pool outline. Views from indoor living spaces, sun and shade, planting, deck circulation and the route from the house all influence how the backyard feels. Review existing site constraints with the design team before settling on a shape or feature.
Bring your property survey and photos of the yard, where available.
A spa, sun ledge or water feature should serve a purpose, not simply fill space. Compare how much swimming room each choice leaves, where seating belongs and how water sounds will carry toward the home. Consider the equipment and upkeep alongside the visual effect.
Separate your must-have features from the nice-to-haves.
Compare coping, waterline tile, interior finishes and decking as a coordinated palette. View samples in daylight and discuss how lighting changes the scene after sunset. Leave practical space for furniture, access and maintenance so the design works beyond the photograph.
Use the 3D presentation to review sightlines, proportions and material choices.
Save images you enjoy, then identify the detail that draws you in: the shape, water color, deck, planting or evening lighting. This gives your designer a useful brief while leaving room for a design that responds to your own property.
Choose your primary use for the water.
Consider views from inside the home as well as the patio.
Map sunny, shaded and sheltered places in the yard.
Review steps, seating and circulation in the 3D presentation.
Compare finish samples alongside the home’s existing materials.

Design for daytime and evening
A pool can look different from the kitchen, a lounge chair and an upstairs window. Review those viewpoints together with the lighting plan. Consider where people will sit, how they will move around the water, and which features you want to enjoy when nobody is swimming.
Bring your questions, inspiration photos and project priorities to the consultation. We can help you compare directions and identify the next decisions for your property.
